X-Men ’97 – Episode 1

The animation is probably the biggest selling point of the show currently. If the last time you watched this show was back in the 90s, then a lot of things probably will go by unnoticed, but as someone that watches this show around once every couple years, it’s pretty obvious the changes. Detail in characters has been traded for animation, which has its positives and negatives but I think – all around – it’s a net good.

There are some jarring parts of this episode, however, such as a random almost talking-head-like segment where Jubilee is talking to Roberto and it seems like she’s alone in the room. I found it rather off putting. There are a couple times where this happens, too. Cyclops is the standout character in this episode. The animators must really love this dude, because he is using his powers to such great effect that was previously unseen in the animated show. Things like using his optic blast to help him run or shoot himself toward an enemy to punch or even using an optic blast in lieu of a parachute. All really badass.

Plot-wise it feels very much like a typical X-Men episode from the 90s. Sentinels are back, Trask is evil, and somehow the Friends of Humanity have gotten their hands on some Sentinel tech. The one lore piece that has confused me is that Trask is evil. I remember the early episodes of the show a lot more than later ones, but at the end of season 1, Trask had decided to destroy his Mastermold because it had gone too far. I must have foolishly assumed that this meant that he wasn’t quite as mutant hating by the end, but this episode seems to either retcon or dissuade me from that thought.

All in all a solid episode and one I will continue looking forward to in the future.
