LiveJournal Pilfer – Look: Up in the Sky!

I wait with great anticipation to see this movie. Not just because I love Superman, and I LOVE Superman. If I were to make a top 10 list of my favorite Superhero’s of all time, he would be in the top 5. He is the embodiment of everything a hero should strive to become. Hell, he’s the embodiment of what many REAL PEOPLE have and should strive to become. His morals are pure, his goals are exemplary. If we wanted any hero to exist in the real world, it would be this one. If done right, a Superman movie would be the ultimate in escaping reality. Everything about him is bigger than life and nigh perfect. More than that, it is a story about Humanity, and the notion of an alien that wants so badly to fit into what is right and true about the best IN humanity.

I think it’s safe to say that this movie scares me. As much as I love some of his movies, Zach Snyder hasn’t really proven to me that he’s among the elites in the directorial world. His ‘best’ works – 300 and Watchmen, have been mostly spoonfed to him in terms of story, dialogue, characterization – everything really, and he still almost ruined it with the shitty on-screen translation, its corniness and Matrix-style nigh-superhuman fight scenes, missing the point of the original material. Not to mention the style he represents doesn’t fit Superman in the slightest. This cannot be a balls out action film, it won’t work that way; and it will soil the notion of how great Superman is and always will be. It will take more than a Zach Snyder to make this movie great is what I’m saying.

What excites me about this trailer are multiple things. The tone of the trailer: It’s perfect. Clark went through this phase prior to Superman but after his time in Smallville, where he backpacked the country(s?) to sort of find out what it means to be human and to know what it is you want to be. This could be done so beautifully (And was in the scope of this trailer) on the big screen. It’s the Classic Zeus-Like “Walking with the Mortals”.

The Music from Lord of the Rings (Khazad Doom I believe?) fit surprisingly well for this. It reinforced that tone I mentioned earlier. I know they probably won’t use it in the film but I’m hoping they go a subtler route than John Williams (His Scoring for Superman is Incredible, but I will always see it as the Christopher Reeves Superman as opposed to making it stand on it’s own legs).

The Third thing that impresses me from this trailer is the Pitch Perfect Dialogue. Borrowing from Grant Morrison was the best thing they could do for Superman:

I can only hope that the dialogue from this entire movie has the same caliber of dialogue that the teaser has shown. As a matter of fact, anything taken from All-Star Superman will be a welcome sight to behold.

In Short: Don’t fuck this up, Snyder… because I’ll never forgive you if you do.
